The Labrador Retriever is a very popular pet that is much sort after by families with children. This breed is divided into two types, known as the American Labrador and the English Labrador. Both types can grow up to an average height of 22 – 24 inches (Males) or 21 – 23 inches (Females). Their average weight ranges from 60 – 75 pounds (Males) to 55 – 70 pounds (Females).
While the English breed can be identified as the stocky and heavy type, the American lab is more long-limbed and taller. They smooth double coats that are water resistant and can come in colors of solid yellow, black or dark chocolate. Another specialty about labs are their feet which have a webbing that helps them become marvelous swimmers.
The Labrador Retriever has a more than average intelligence, which coupled with natural patience and a good-natured, eager to please personality, makes it an excellent companion and family pet. They are willing to accept the owners as leaders and can be trained with ease. Labradors are great watch dogs, but never good guard dogs.
These energetic dogs need daily exercise and will do well when given a task. However, they also tend to gain weight and must not be overfed.
